Curatorium

The Splendid Curatorium is comprised of recognised art professionals and is responsible for selecting participating artists and provocateurs for the Splendid Arts Lab.

The Curatorium determines which works are commissioned for the Splendour in the Grass festival. Members of the Curatorium also support participating artists by developing strategies to further their development and by providing access to creative networks.

Craig Schuftan

Craig Schuftan is an author and broadcaster from Sydney, Australia. He is the author of The Culture Club (2007) and Hey! Nietzsche! Leave Them Kids Alone (2009), and has been presenting The Culture Club - a radio segment about the history of art and ideas in rock and roll - on triple j since 2002. Last year, he worked as a guest curator on the Powerhouse Museum's The 80s Are Back exhibition, which in turn inspired a new radio series and podcast for triple j, Acceptable in the 80s.

Craig Schuftan

Craig Walsh

Craig Walsh was born in Orange in 1966, and lives in Brisbane, Australia.

Primarily interested in hybrid / site-specific projects and the exploration of alternative contexts for contemporary art, his work often utilizes projection in response to existing environments and contexts. He has been working across a range of art forms including theatre, architecture, public works, gallery exhibitions, natural environments and festivals. 

His work has been selected for major survey exhibitions, commissions and residencies both nationally and internationally, including; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia, SJ01 Biennale San Jose, California, Jakarta Biennale, the Yokohama International Triennale of Contemporary Art, Japan. Fuji Rock Festival, Japan. Experimenta Under the radar, Liverpool, England. The National Sculpture Prize & Exhibition, National Gallery of Australia, Havana Biennale, Cuba, the Anne Landa Award, AGNSW, Sydney; the Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art, AGSA, Adelaide. Institute of Modern Art Brisbane and Ssamsie space, Seoul, Korea. In 2006 he produced the projection design for the theatre production of David Malouf's 'Johnno'

Craig Walsh

Recently completed projects took place in The river Thames, London as part of DRIFT 08, Koganecho Bazaar, Yokahama, Sendai Mediateque and Tokyo Wondersite in Japan, ACMI in Melbourne, Media City Seoul, Korea the Australia Council's studio residency in New York and Nuit Blanche, in Toronto where his work took out the Peoples Choice Award for Zone C.

Jessica Ducrou

Jessica Ducrou started her career in 1988 at Red Eye Records followed with 2 years at Rolling Stone Magazine as their accounts manager. Deciding she wanted to work more directly with music she managed to convince the Lansdowne Hotel she would be a great booker and spent a period managing their entertainment schedule. In 1994 she was offered an agent's position at APA Agency and then went on to form a partnership with Joe Segreto at International Music Concepts to co-promote the inaugural Homebake music festival in 1996.

In 1998, Jessica established Village Sounds as a booking agency to represent her then large roster of notable Australian acts, before going on to create the Splendour In the Grass festival in Byron Bay in 2001. As well as her key role with Splendour In the Grass, Jessica has continued her association with the Homebake festival and both events have become landmark fixtures on the Australian music calendar.

As well as her festival promotion role, Jessica has recently expanded her domestic booking agency Village Sounds with Evan Davis formerly of The Harbour Agency joining the team.

Jessica Ducrou

In addition to representing Powderfinger, Bernard Fanning and The Vines the roster now includes The Grates, The Mess Hall, Yves Klein Blue, Expatriate, Violent Soho, Cut Off Your Hands, Cassette Kids, Art vs Science, The Middle East. She also has Secret Sounds, an international touring company in partnership with Paul Piticco from Secret Service and together they have toured The Flaming Lips, Laura Marling, Bloc Party, The Doves, Supergrass, Sigur Ros, The Fratellis, TV On The Radio and Hot Chip among others in Australia.

Julian Louis

Julian is a theatre director, performer and devisor/collaborator. He holds a BA in Theatre and Media from Charles Sturt University Bathurst, is a graduate of the NIDA's director's course, and has trained with Philippe Gaulier (London) after being awarded the Lend Lease Scholarship from the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP).

Julian is currently the Artistic Director of NORPA, the Northern Rivers Performing Arts Inc based in Lismore. For the company Julian has directed Not Like Beckett and The Bloody Bride and is currently developing new theatre works as part of NORPA's Generator Program. Julian has devised and directed Wilde Tales for B Sharp and Critical Stages' extensive tour of NSW and Five Stories High as part of the 2003 Sydney Festival for State of Play, which he co founded in 2001. Some credits from the last few years include: Director Monkey Shines for Loose Canon /Sydney Opera House, Associate Director The Underpants, Company B Belvoirs' national tour; Director, the Menotti Opera The Telephone and the Shakespearean Opera Project The Falling for The Sydney Conservatorium of Music; Director Performix and Contact for ATYP and was movement Director/ associate Director on Spurboard by Nick Enright for ATYP and STC.

Julian Louis

Julian has extensive experience in directing youth theatre, creating original works in regional communities throughout Australia. Julian is a Board member of Kultour, a national touring body for multicultural arts and is on the Board of Spaghetti Circus based in Northern NSW.

 

Tony Duke

Tony is is the Regional Arts Development Officer and CEO of Arts Northern Rivers, one of 13 Regional Arts Boards across NSW. His role is to work with the local councils and arts organisations in the region to further develop the vibrant arts and cultural sector. Tony has an extensive background working across the arts and creative industries in the areas of community cultural development, visual arts, performing arts (music, theatre, dance), publishing, festivals and cultural celebrations and community broadcasting.

He has recently arrived back in Australia from Ghana, West Africa where he was Executive Director of the 2nd International Conference on African Culture and Development (November 2009). His career includes: Executive Officer at ARTback NT (visual and performing art touring); Senior Program Officer at the ATSI Board of the Australia Council; Community Festivals Development Manager at Manukau City NZ; Artistic Director/Executive Producer of the First Night Millennium NYE celebrations Aukland NZ;Research Fellow at Te Ake O Nga waka (Centre for Cultural Tourism and Hospitality) Department of Maori Studies, Auckland University of Technology; Deputy Director of Publishing, Aboriginal Studies Press, AIATSIS; Manager Blackbooks, Tranby Co-operative for Aborigines Ltd; Producer of the Sydney Building Bridges concerts; and a background in local government including Youth Services Co-ordinator (Warringah Shire) and Community Arts Officer, Bondi Pavilion (Waverly).

Tony Duke

He has worked varying consultancies ranging from the coordination of the public television test broadcasts in Sydney through the feasibility studies for the establishment of Indigenous Radio in Sydney to a range of community festival development plans and feasibility studies for Arts ACT. In 2007 -2008 he was contracted by a US based agency to tour Native American and African American artists into Mexico and the Middle East.

Brett Adlington

Brett Adlington is Director of Lismore Regional Gallery. He has worked in the regional gallery sector for nearly 15 years since graduating from Sydney College of the Arts. Prior to Lismore Regional Gallery he worked in curatorial positions at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, Gold Coast City Art Gallery and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. For Gold Coast City Art Gallery he produced over 30 exhibitions across a wide range of areas, many examining the particularities of Gold Coast culture. These include A Place in the sun: historical visions of the Gold Coast and All that Glitters ...contemporary visions of the Gold Coast. In 2005 he curated the Scott Redford solo exhibition The content of these paintings is secret, known only to the people of Surfers Paradise, and in 2002 he curated and toured 6ft + clean: surf + art to nine venues across the country.

Brett has curated numerous exhibitions in a freelance capacity including 12 Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland that toured throughout that state. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Cultural Management from the University of South Australia.

Brett Adlington

His now defunct art practice included exhibitions at Museum of Brisbane, Queensland Centre for Photography, Toowoomba Regional Gallery, Redland Art Gallery and Umbrella Studio.

 

Annemarie Kohn

Annemarie Kohn trained in Contemporary Dance and Interactive Multimedia. She has worked across these artforms as an artist, teacher, festival producer and collaborator, currently employed by Carclew Youth Arts as Program Manager of Visual Arts and Digital Media, a program that supports emerging South Australian artists to translate their creative practice for public space.

Over the past 8 years she has been developing open access workshops and public art training and employment programs that explore cross-artform practices in digital media, open source technology, live performance and public art. She produced the Moving Image Project for 3 years, exhibiting over 80 new digital media works each year as part of a major State-wide festival.

Her main interest is in the creation and exhibition of work using technology to support the communication of the artwork. This has led to working with leading companies including Blast Theory, UK (2004 & 2009) and the Graffiti Research Lab, NY.

Annemarie Kohn

She has served on multifarious panels and Boards including Chair of the Arts SA Organisations Assessment Panel Industry Development Program, the South Australian Youth Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts, Adelaide City Council Public Art Round Table, Arts Industry Council of SA, and the Graham F Smith Peace Trust (SA based autonomous arts funding body.)
